Thoun Bein, Getting around Mawlamyine Thoun Bein literally means 'three wheels' and are similar to the tuk-tuks you find in Thailand or the Bajajs of Indonesia. Most of the thoun beins ply along Lower Main Rd from Zeigyi to Zeigyo via Mongan and back again. Despite their size, they are often seen carrying up to 8 people (six seated and two standing at the back) as well as an assortment of cargo from rice and flour, to car engine parts. Unfortunately, Mawlamyine's thoun beins have seen better days and many are in need of service and repair. For a trip of around 2 to 3 kilometers in a thoun bein, expect to pay 100 kyat per person. Thoun beins can also be hired for short trips to specific places. Prices for this varies and should be negotiated with the driver before the journey.
