Getting to Mawlamyine by Air

Mawlamyine is one of those destinations which is too close to travel by air, yet too far to be travelling by road! Because Mawlamyine is located across the Gulf of Mottoma, its straightline "flightpath" distance from Yangon is only 160 km, yet to get there overland takes you close to covering 280 km by road.

By air, Mawlamyine is a 40 minute flight from Yangon with the only service being provided by the Government airline, Myanma Airways using Fokker F27 aircraft. There is one flight a week on Fridays. As for what time the flight operates, well, the schedule is kind of 'ad-hoc' and passengers are required to call a mobile number before 6:00am on Friday to find out! There is a chance that there will be no flight at all, for what ever reasons. 
The flight actually flies from Yangon to Myeik in Tanintharyi Division via Mawlamyine and will stop in Mawlamyine if there is demand.

To give you an indication of how 'ad-hoc' the flight schedules are with Myanma Airways, a whiteboard located outside the Mawlamyine office serves as the weekly timetable. It's written using non-permanent whiteboard markers so that changes can be effected quickly and a mobile phone number is given should you need to make enquiries as to whether the flight is actually available or not. Myanma Airways is well known for changing their schedule at the last minute and reports from locals also indicate that changes to flight schedules mid-flight can also occur as well!
