Mawlamyine is one of those destinations which is too close to travel by air, yet too far to be travelling by road! Because Mawlamyine is located across the Gulf of Mottoma, its straightline "flightpath" distance from Yangon is only 160 km, yet to get there overland takes you close to covering 280 km by road.

By air, Mawlamyine is a 40 minute flight from Yangon with the only service being provided by the Government airline, Myanma Airways and brand new AVIC MA60 aircraft. The MA60 is a modern 56 seater turbo-prop aircraft cable of flying at 450 km/hr at a ceiling of 25,000 ft above sea level. It has a glass cockpit and well equipped with modern US made flight instrumentation from Collins, a GPS and Flight Management System from Universal and Pratt and Whitney PW127 engines delivering 2750 shp each.

There are currently two flights a week from Yangon to Mawlamyine on Thursday and Saturday and tickets costs $50 arriving Mawlamyine at 11:15am. As the flight then proceeds to Kawthaung, it is not possible to fly return to Yangon without buying a ticket to Kawthaung first, and then at Kawthaung buying another ticket to Yangon. The flight from Mawlamyine to Kauthaung takes just under 2 hours and costs $133.

Airfares to Kawthaung can be purchased at the Myanma Airways ticket office in Mawlamyine at 5 Thit Taw Yone St (just after Myoma Tadar St near the Aurora Guest House). Ph: (057) 21500.
