Chan Thar Restaurant

This huge restaurant has just recently opened and serves a variety of Myanmar and Chinese dishes. The food here is excellent and very well presented and the service is fast and efficient. Furthermore, this place is a lot more hygenic than some of the other places around Mawlamyine.

They have a large variety of dishes including beef, chicken, pork, eel, fish, prawns and seafood and prices are reasonable. You can get a serve of sweet and sour prawns for 3000 kyat, seafood tom yum with fresh prawns and crabs also for 3000 kyat each and Shanghai style seafood platter for 3500 kyat. A plate of steam rice is 150 kyat and a can of Coca Cola is 600 kyat. If you're not conversant in the Myanmar language, ask for the menu in English, but you may have to ask how much each dish is since the prices have been left out.

Live band performances start at 8pm

You can choose to dine either on the lower floor or the upper floor where a live band plays mainly Myanmar rock accompanied by interchangeable female singers. This is Mawlamyine's main night entertainment scene and if the female singers appeal to you, you can buy a garland to place around them whilst they're singing. They're then obliged to sit with you at your table for a few minutes after their song. The garlands range in price from 2000 kyat upwards and the more expensive the garland, the longer the singer will stay with you. There are also a number of karaoke booths at this restaurant where you'll often find very well dressed Mawlamyine youths part-taking in one of Myanmar's favourite past-times.

The restaurant is located on Myoma Tadar St, about 30 metres from the intersection with Lower Main Rd.
