Yunnan Sa Thauk Zain - Fried Chicken |
Yunnan Sa Thauk Zain This shop is known to locals as Yunnan Restaurant (Yunnan Sa Thauk Zain) which serves Chinese/Thai Muslim dishes. Its Myanmar owner has an interesting heritage hailing from both the Chinese province of Yunnan as well as Kothaung on the Myanmar/Thai border and can speak fluent Burmese as well as Thai. As a result, the type of cuisine available here include Thai and Chinese dishes, such as Char Zen Kyaw (fried vicemelli noodles with choice of prawns, or chicken), Si' Chek (wheat noodles with chicken pieces mixed in fried brown onion oil), Kao Sway Kyaw (fried noodles of the thicker variety with chicken and vegetables), Mami Kao Sway (two-minute noodles with added vegetables and eggs) and Htamin Kyaw (fried rice).
This shop however is well known for it's fried chicken and at one time, was known as Mawlamyine's "KFC" with its own secret herbs and spices. The fried chicken served here is as good as the authentic KFC and some would argue that it's even better! Fried fresh on the spot, it's usually served with chilli sauce and a plate of rice. Other KFC side dishes such as potato and gravy, coleslaw and Zinger burgers however are not available! The shop does serve a range of other typical hawker style foods as mentioned above (unfortunately there are no menus in English), but its chicken is what draws most of their customers to this place. Its KFC chicken is usually available after 4pm, but other dishes are available earlier. Fried Chicken, Chek Tha Kyaw The shop is located on Strand Rd (Kanna Lan) about 200 meters north of the Breeze Rest House about 100 meters past the cinema on the corner of Kyaikthanlan St and Strand Rd. Note that this shop should not be confused with Kentucky Chicken Wing which is located further north on the corner of Phat Tan St and Strand Rd.
