Zeigyi

Zeigyi, Au Zei (Lower market region)
Zeigyi literally means "big market" and in Mawlamyine, it refers to the area that covers the main bazaar area of town from as far west as Strand Rd to as far east as Upper Main Rd. Zeigyi is further divided in to two smaller areas known to the locals as "a-paw zei" or "upper market" and "au zei" or lower market. Note that a popular guide book on Myanmar incorrectly calls this area Zeigyo rather than Zeigyi. Zeigyo is actually in a different area of Mawlamyine located 5 kilometres south of the main town center.

The upper market area of Zeigyi includes the large 4 story Myine Yadanar Centre (MYC) which is Mawlamyine's most modern shopping centre. It's the one place in the whole town where you'll find an escalator. It even has elevators, however, you'll be lucky to find either the escalator or elevator operating due to the constant power blackouts affecting this city on a daily basis. MYC has a range of shops including Amazing PC and Blue Line public Internet access centres on the 4th and 3rd floors respectively. There are many gold and jewellery stalls on the second floor of MYC at the northern end where it abridges with the bazaar. More information about Myine Yadanar Shopping Centre can be found here .

Adjoining MYC is the more traditional, bazaar type market selling a variety of goods from watches, sunglasses, toys made from China, shoes, sandals, cosmetics, pirate CD and DVD videos. On the second floor of the bazaar, you can find fabrics and longyis as well as local brand t-shrts such as "Next Step" selling for around 6000 to 8000 kyat.

Zeigyi Lower Market (Au Zei)

The lower market area of Zeigyi is the area west of Anauk Tat Myay Rd and includes the area that used to be "People's Market No1" between Strand Rd and Lower Main Rd. In December 2008, a huge fire razed this area to the ground and burnt for two days destroying all shops and stalls in the area. In January 2009, part of the southern end of the market was rebuilt and temporary stalls were established. In June 2009, however, work began on creating a whole new modern two storey shopping and market complex in this area due for completion in 2010. Stalls at the northern end of People's Market No 1 on Thaton Tadar St continue to trade as normal as shown in the picture left of page.
